Alternatives client statistics mirror those within our community.  Half of the population of the state of California  and that of the community we serve is female.  In 2006 the State of California recognized that the birthrate in the teen population was declining (see report).  The sexual health message that Alternatives presents challenges young women in their teen years and beyond to live a life of sexual health and integrity until marriage.
    

Young women who are sexually active are at far greater risk to Sexually Transmitted Disease than sexually active young men.  Approximately one in four sexually active teens contracts an STD every year.  It is estimated that one out of two teens will contract a sexually transmitted disease by age 25. 

Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended, and four in 10 of these are terminated by abortion. At least half of American women will experience an unintended pregnancy by age 45, and, at current rates, about one-third will have had an abortion (Guttmacher Institute).   Alternatives goal is to put a comforting arm around the woman who finds herself in an unplanned pregnancy, supporting her with real answers and hope for the future.
